Year in Review 2023

With seed starting well on it’s way we are remembering the amazing summer we had last year sharing the farm and flower fields with family, friends and community. At the same time, we are steeped in visions for the summer to come. As with every growing season, last summer presented welcomed successes, lessons to be learned as well as unexpected surprises.

Here are a few things we learned last year:

• Zinnias can’t be planted out the day before the last frost, even with frost cloth;
• 27 feet of Basil is a little too much. Nine feet will do nicely;
• Don’t let a porcupine get into your field. It will eat all your Cherry Plum trees.

Here are a few things that amazed us last year:

• The rainbow of Sweet Peas that lasted into late summer;
• The Honeywort that we experimented with and turned out to be a favorite filler;
• The twinkle that the Frosted Explosion added to so many bouquets;
• The never ending joy of watching people relax and enjoy the flowers as the sun set over the field.

This summer we are so excited to trial more flowers to add variety to choose from. We are adding Craspedia, a yellow ping pong flower that adds whimsy to a bouquet. Bunny tails will be joined by other grasses and plumes to add a variety textures and movement to bouquets. We are also thrilled to be adding specialty Zinnias from Floret Flowers which are available to growers for the first time this season.
